Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run warmed up for the defence of his steeplechasing crown with a workmanlike half-length victory over his stable companion Burton Point in an exciting renewal of the Grade 2 Betfair Denman Chase, but there were a few anxious moments in the closing stages and some observers were far from impressed by the performance, writes Elliot Slater.

One positive point was that the 4/7 favourite jumped far better than he had at either Haydock or Kempton earlier on this season when beaten on both occasions by the ageless Kauto Star, but cynics might suggest that was precisely as a result of the five-time King George VI Chase winner not being there to take Long Run out of his comfort zone. Those looking at the 2012 Cheltenham betting online will have been left with plenty of questions.

Nevertheless, the reigning champion took up the running at the third from home from the pace setting The Giant Bolster but Sam Waley-Cohen was forced to get to work on the seven-year-old going down to the last as both What A Friend and Burton Port were keeping on stoutly.

A fine leap from Long Run at the last looked to have wrapped things up as he went three lengths clear, but then Barry Geraghty conjured a great late effort out of Burton Port who eventually came within half-a-length of pulling off a major shock as the favourite was driven right out to hold on in the last 50 yards. A lot of credit must go to Burton Port on his first outing for 15 months, (as he provided trainer Nicky Henderson with a 1-2 in the contest), but bookmakers reacted by easing Long Run to 5/2 favourite (from 2/1) for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, at the same time trimming Kauto Star to just 7/2 (from 4/1), and slashing Burton Port’s odds from 33/1, to a top priced 14/1.

Despite the close call connections confirmed themselves very pleased with Long Run’s first win of the term and report him bang on track to defend his crown on March 16.
